Heaphy was apprenticed to the engraver R.M. Meadows, and in his spare time attended a drawing school in Bloomsbury. He first exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy in 1797 then spent a few years working in watercolour before returning to portrait painting. He painted Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold and was appointed portrait painter to the Princess of Wales.
