The men of the House of Commons Night Fire Brigade are posed in uniform with their fire-fighting equipment. Fire safety became a priority after the devastating fire on 16 October 1834, which destroyed much of the old Palace of Westminster, leaving only The Jewel Tower, Westminster Hall, the crypt of St Stephen's Chapel and the cloisters unharmed.
