James Miller studied medicine at St Andrews and Edinburgh universities. He was licensed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1832 and was subsequently elected as a Fellow. He was appointed Professor of Surgery at the University of Edinburgh in 1842 and went on to become surgeon-in-ordinary in Scotland to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
