Born in London and educated at the Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities, Jowell entered Parliament as Labour MP for Dulwich in 1992. She served as Minister for Women (1998-2001), Minister for Employment (1999-2001), Minister for Public Heath (1997-9) and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (2001-7). Her greatest triumph was as Minister for the Olympics (2005-2010), leading London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. On Jowell's seventieth birthday, it was announced she was suffering from a rare form of brain cancer.... more
