From 1926 to 1938 he taught English literature at Birkbeck College, University of London. In 1938 he joined the BBC as a writer-producer in the features department, where he went on to become editor of features and poetry. A ten-day power cut at the beginning of 1947 cancelled all broadcasting and gave him the opportunity to write the book which gave a new concept to the world of sport.
