Plein-air genre painter and a leading figure of the Newlyn School. Forbes studied at the Royal Academy and in Paris and travelled to Brittany to learn the progressive French practice of plein-air painting. After further visits to Brittany, Forbes settled in the Cornish village of Newlyn where he joined a group of like-minded artists. His ambitious canvas, A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach, brought the group to the attention of critics and audiences when exhibited to acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1885.... more
