Born in Hull, Courtenay trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before making his stage debut in The Seagull at the Old Vic (1960). In 1961 he took over Albert Finney's role in Billy Liar at London's Cambridge Theatre, later reprising the part for the film version (1963). Courtenay's performance in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) won him a BAFTA award. He was Oscar-nominated for his roles in Doctor Zhivago (1965) and The Dresser (1983) and knighted in 2001.
