Actors Squire Bancroft and Effie Wilton married in 1867. Although she is conventionally posed beside her husband with downturned eyes, the turning of his face towards her with his mouth slightly parted suggests a conversation between them, evoking the professional partnership they enjoyed. Together the Bancrofts established a successful theatre company that set new standards of production, raised the status of the acting profession and brought middle-class respectability to the theatre.
