Politician and connoisseur. Unionist MP for Hythe (1912-39); private secretary to Lord Haig (1915-18); Under-Secretary of State for Air (1924-9 and 1931-7). The restoration of Thornhill's Painted Hall at Greenwhich, was begun when Sassoon became First Commissioner for Works in 1937. He was Chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery and a Trustee of the Tate Gallery, the Wallace Collection, and the British School at Rome.
