Sir Kenelm Digby NPG D16556

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Robert van Voerst, after Sir Anthony van Dyck

The courtier Sir Kenelm Digby was passionately in love with Lady Venetia Stanley, a celebrated beauty. Against his family's wishes, they were secretly married in 1625. Eight years later Venetia was found dead in her bed. He was destroyed by the loss of his wife. As this engraving suggests, he relinquished worldly concerns and, dressing as a hermit, dedicated himself to the all-engulfing grief of his lost love.
