First became known for his command during the Second Boer War. He served in the 1897 Tirah Expedition in India and in the South African War of 1899-1902. Just before the outbreak of World War I, he was a ringleader of the Curragh Mutiny. In 1914, he was placed in command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, before being appointed Commander of the new 5th Army on its formation in 1916.
