Entering the Navy in 1813, Austin took part in Parry's second Arctic expedition of 1824-25. Between 1832 and 1834 he commanded Salamander, one of the first steamers in the Navy. After becoming captain in 1838, Austin served in the Syrian war, 1839-43, and in 1850-51 he commanded a squadron in search of Sir John Franklin. From 1854 he served first as superintendent of Deptford dockyard, and then as admiral superintendent of Malta dockyard.
