Holland was a cousin of the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and his mother Mary was the niece of the potter Josiah Wedgwood. After completing his medical training, he spent eighteen months travelling in Portugal, Gibraltar, Sardinia, Sicily, the Ionian Isles and Greece. On his return, he published Travels in the Ionian Isles, Albania, Thessaly, Macedonia etc (1812 and 1813). The book was an immediate success.
