Welsh baritone Evans made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1948, and became the company's principal baritone until his retirement in 1984. At twenty-two, he was Britten's first choice for the title role in Billy Budd, but finding some of the part too high for his voice, he sang instead the role of Mr Flint, the sailing master.
