A Liberal MP from 1865, Trevelyan served in all four of William Gladstone's administrations, although he never held any of the principal offices of state. He is best remembered for his biography of his uncle Lord Macaulay and for his part in the political events surrounding Gladstone's introduction of Irish Home Rule (1886), which Trevelyan first opposed and then reluctantly supported.
