Sir Arthur Wing Pinero était l'un des principaux dramaturges de la fin des époques victorienne et édouardienne. Né dans une famille anglaise issue de juifs portugais, Pinero abandonne ses études de droit à dix-neuf ans pour devenir acteur. Sa première pièce, 200 £ par an , a été produite en 1877. Ses meilleures farces, telles que The Magistrate (1885), The Schoolmistress (1886) et Dandy Dick (1887), ont été écrites pour le Royal Court Theatre de Londres.
