Harty was one of television's best-loved personalities, remembered for hosting chat-shows on both BBC and ITV during the 1970s and 80s. Originally a teacher, and later a producer of BBC radio arts programmes, Harty made his television debut in 1969 interviewing the artist Salvador Dalì. He also wrote regularly for newspapers and presented the BBC Radio 4 topical programme, Start the Week.
