by Rupert Potter

The Potters enjoyed frequent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. These provided children with the opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside and indulge their interest in animals and natural history, inspiring the illustrated children's books for which Beatrix became famous. The first of these, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was published in 1902. The family is most likely shown here during their holiday in Lennel, Coldstream, where they stayed between mid-July and mid-October 1894.
