The self-portrait of the artist with his favourite 14-bore shotgun was a study for a large, Gainsborough-inspired, conversation piece painted about 1936 and subsequently destroyed. The complete work showed the artist with his first wife, Kathleen, and their son David against the background of the Adur valley in West Sussex.
