Brother of the Duke of Wellington, Richard Colley Wellesley played a vital role in the consolidation of British rule in India during the Regency. In 1793 he became a commissioner of the Board of Control for India, and in 1797 was appointed Governor-General. Wellesley pursued an aggressive policy of expansion, partly in order to reduce the French presence.
