During the period in which this portrait was made, the artist and sitter were collaborating on a number of theatrical productions. Their association as playwright and composer had begun in 1929 with Adam’s Opera for the Old Vic in London, followed by original plays and adaptations including Come of Age (1933), Moonlight is Silver, L’Aiglon (both 1934) and The Happy Hypocrite (1936).
