Butler trained as an architect and worked as a blacksmith before becoming Henry Moore's assistant and developing his own talent as a sculptor. His first solo exhibition was held in 1949 at the Hanover Gallery in London and two years later he was appointed as a teacher at the Slade School of Fine Art.
