Artist Humphrey Ocean has a long association with the National Portrait Gallery, having won the Gallery's annual portrait prize in 1982, subsequently undertaking commissions of sitters including Sir Paul McCartney (1983) and Philip Larkin (1984). This portrait pairs an artist and sitter who share a relationship with the Gallery, and who are friends.
