Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, Lichfield served in the Grenadier Guards from 1959-1962 before becoming a professional photographer. He was quickly in demand for editorial work, including Life, Queen Magazine and a five-year contract with American Vogue given by Diana Vreeland in 1967. Lichfield's many royal commissions included the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.
