Born in Bangalore, India, Gopal was a dancer, choreographer and teacher, who pioneered classical Indian dance styles such as Kathakali in the UK, where he first danced in 1939. After the Second World War he starred in a number of Hollywood epics made on location, such as The Purple Plain (1954) and William Dieterle's Elephant Walk (1954), for which he choreographed the dance sequences.
