Officers of the 'Terra Nova' NPG P313

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Herbert George Ponting

One of a number of photographs by Herbert Ponting of the crew of the Terra Nova, Scott's ship on his last expedition. The presence of James Dennistoun at the far left suggests that this photograph may date from December, 1910, on the vessel's first voyage south from New Zealand. The best known travel photographer of the period, Ponting broke new ground when invited by Scott to accompany him to the Antarctic. Ponting's superb photographs are a remarkable record of the ill-fated expedition.
