The Prince Imperial was the only son of Napoleon III, Emperor of France, and his wife Eugénie. The Emperor was deposed in 1870 and the family were exiled to England. The Prince joined the British army and was permitted to attend the Anglo-Zulu war, only following the intercession of Queen Victoria.
