Geneticist and economist, Bodmer's groundbreaking research explored the relationship between the immune system and genetics. This played a key role in the discovery of the system of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and developed understanding and treatments of AIDS and cancer. After studying philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford, she became a statistician assistant at Cambridge University.
