Dorothy grew up travelling, and later, when her husband became an author, she too turned her hand to travel writing. Ill health first took her to North Africa, and in 1923 she became the first western woman to reach Timbuktu, publishing The Road to Timbuktu the following year. Further African journeys and books followed illustrated with her own photographs, taken in Liberia, and then Senegal, as recorded in The Golden Land (1929).
