Somerville studied at the Slade School of Art and was a painter until the Second World War. She joined the British Council in 1941, first working as a teacher and then as an organiser of art exhibitions on behalf of the Allied Governments. As a director of the Fine Arts Department (1947-1970), Somerville did much to promote British contemporary art abroad.
