Born in Ireland, Pentland led expeditions to map the geography of large areas of Bolivia and Peru. He used the latest barometers to survey the Andes and identified many peaks as volcanoes. He also contributed to the latest knowledge of natural history by his discovery and study of fossils at high altitude. Pentland served as consul-general in Bolivia from 1836-9.
