Broadcaster and author, Simpson began his long career with the BBC in 1970, as a reporter and correspondent. Having moved to television, he became diplomatic correspondent (1978-80), political editor (1980-82), diplomatic editor (1982-88) and world affairs editor (since 1988). He has also been associate editor for The Spectator. Publications Include Despatches from the Barricade (1990) and his autobiography Strange Places, Questionable People (1998). Simpson reported from Angola in the 1970s, the Gulf in 1991 and many other countries including Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
