John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury and family NPG x29790

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Edgar Davey Lavender

This photograph shows Lubbock with his second wife Alice (née Fox-Pitt-Rivers) and three of his eleven children: son Harold and daughters Irene and Ursula. They stand at the entrance to High Elms, the family's country home near Downe in Kent. In 1841, Lubbock's father Sir John William Lubbock (1803-65), built this Italianate mansion in the grounds of the family estate. The house was later destroyed by fire, but in 1965 the grounds became High Elms Country Park in the London Borough of Bromley.
