John Linnell was a successful and much admired artist during his lifetime. He had a thriving portrait practice, but his real passion was always landscape painting. Largely self-taught, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1805, and he became a pupil of John Varley at around the same time. From 1807 to 1811, he exhibited oil paintings, mainly genre scenes and landscapes, at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution.
