Hewson worked his way up in the ranks to Colonel of one of the regiments of the New Model Army. Parliament passed an act against religious festivals and when the Mayor of Canterbury tried to enforce this by banning Christmas, there was a riot and John Hewson's Regiment of Foot were sent to restore order which they did quickly.
