by William Salter

As a young infantry officer, Gurwood was badly wounded leading a storming party at the siege of Badajoz (1812). He transferred to the cavalry, had a number of staff jobs and was wounded again at Waterloo. He reached the rank of colonel, and was deputy-governor of the Tower of London before committing suicide, probably due to nervous strain and the lingering shock of his wounds.
