Irish tenor McCormack was an internationally renowned opera singer. In the years before the war he appeared at the Salzburg Festival and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he settled in 1914. In November of that year he recorded It's A Long, Long Way To Tipperary, written by Jack Judge and Harry Williams, which became a favourite marching song with soldiers.
