Campbell trained in the law at Lincoln's Inn and, after working briefly for the Morning Chronicle, was called to the Bar in 1806 where he reported on jury trial cases. He published four volumes of reports extending from 1807 to 1816. Campbell took silk in 1827 and was then elected as a Whig MP in 1830.
