At the young age of sixteen, Bloomfield was appointed as an attaché to Vienna; throughout his life he remained in the diplomatic service. He served as an attaché at Lisbon, Secretary of Legation at Stuttgart, and Secretary of the Embassy at St Petersburg. In 1844, he was promoted to Envoy at St Petersburg and served in the same capacity at Berlin from 1851 before reaching his highest post as Ambassador to Vienna in 1860.
