Guyanese-born Agard began his career as a feature's writer for the Guyana Sunday Chronicle newspaper. After moving to England in 1977 he became a touring lecturer for the Commonwealth Institute promoting better understanding of Caribbean culture in schools. In 1993 he was appointed Poet in Residence at the South Bank Centre and became Poet in Residence at the BBC. His published poetry includes Man to Pan, winner of the Casa de las Américas Prize.
