Socialist politician, author and powerful orator. In 1916 Maxton was imprisoned for sedition as a result of calling for a General Strike on the Clyde. In 1919 he became an organiser for the Independent Labour Party and served as ILP Member for Bridgeton (1922-45). During his Chairmanship of the the Party (1926-31 and 1934-9), the ILP disaffiliated from the Labour Party (1932); after his death the ILP declined and by 1950 had no MPs.
