Charlemont and his close ally Henry Grattan led the Irish nation throughout the 1780s and 1790s, backed by the Irish 'volunteers'. They were a loyal body - formed in response to the threat of French invasion - who had significant political influence. Charlemont was instrumental in organising volunteer rallies and conventions through which the wishes of the Irish nation could be accurately represented to the British administration.
