Epstein first saw Kathleen Garman, who later became his second wife, at a restaurant and immediately asked her to sit for a portrait. He would go on to make seven portraits of her, the last of which is shown here. This photograph was probably taken in the Leicester Galleries, where Epstein held exhibitions throughout his career. Here, Epstein's portraits were often displayed alongside his vast 'primitivist' stone sculptures, which confused many critics.
