Born in Sierra Leone, Oluwole attended Fourah Bay College, where he was one of the first students to receive a Bachelor degree. From 1879-93 he was Principal of the Christian Missionary Society Lagos Grammar School, and during this time was also ordained a Deacon (1881). In 1893 Oluwole visited England, and was consecrated at St Paul's Cathedral as Assistant Bishop of Western Equatorial Africa, receiving a doctor of divinity degree from the University of Durham.
