The Spice Girls were the most successful mainstream female pop band of the 1990s and the fastest selling new act since the Beatles. Their debut single Wannabe (1996) topped the charts in 53 countries and was the first of six consecutive British number ones. With names invented by Top of the Pops magazine, 'Scary', 'Ginger', 'Baby', 'Posh' and 'Sporty Spice' rode on a triumphant slogan of 'Girl Power' and heralded the empowerment of women in pop.
