Anson served at an early age in the Napoleonic wars and fought at the Battle of Waterloo. He entered Parliament as a Whig MP in 1819 and held the offices of Storekeeper of the Ordnance and Clerk of the Ordnance. Having been promoted to major general, Anson was appointed commander of the Madras Army in 1854 and two years later was made commander-in-chief in India.
