The daughter of Richard Cobden and sister of suffragette Anne Cobden-Sanderson, radical politics were ingrained in the family and the legacy of her father's work was kept alive by Unwin and her sisters. A founding member of the Women's Suffrage League, she also championed Irish home rule, the abolition of slavery, campaigned for the families of strikers in East London and for the rights of indigenous people in colonial territories.
