Born in Oxford on 7 August 1826, Gilbert was one of eleven children of Ashurst Turner Gilbert, principal of Brasenose College, Oxford and afterwards bishop of Chichester and his wife Mary Anne. Gilbert received a good education despite being blinded by a bad attack of scarlett fever at the age of three. She established what became the Association for Promoting the General Welfare of the Blind.
