Physician, born in London and brought up in Aldeburgh, Suffolk (the sister of Millicent Fawcett). Despite opposition to the admission of women to medical education, she qualified as the first English woman doctor in 1865. In 1866 she established a dispensary for women in London which became the New Hospital of Women in 1871 where she instituted medical courses for women.
