Edmund Yates was born in Edinburgh, the only child of the well-known actors Frederick Henry Yates and Elizabeth Yates. He began his career as a clerk in the General Post Office, where he remained for twenty-five years. Yates also worked as a journalist, and wrote many dramatic pieces and some novels, including Running the Gauntletand The Black Sheep. He was perhaps best known as editor of The World society journal.
